Finding a Vet

One of the most important first steps as a new pet owner is selecting a vet that meets your needs and treats your pet properly. Sometimes it is difficult to find a pet doctor to meet all pet health care needs. Ask yourself, does the vet welcome my questions? Is there only one doctor in the office or could you possibly see different vets for each visit? Does he/she provide emergency care? Selecting a vet may seem overwhelming, but it can be easier if you follow some simple steps:

Find a vet through family and friends. Ask them likes and dislikes about the vet.
Is it in a convenient location?
Ask if they provide free "Vet Interviews" for you to see how you and your pet like the vet.
How much experience does the vet have?
Note the friendliness and efficiency of the staff.
Is the office clean, welcoming and roomy?
Are there separate entrances for dogs and cats? Are leash or cage required?
Is your pet promptly seen, or is there a long wait?
What about emergency care same place or different location? Who do you call when your pet becomes injured or ill in the middle of the night?
How does the doctor handle your pet. Is he patient and kind?
If you tell him about your pet's quirks, does the vet listen and take precautions?
What is the demeanor of the doctor when he talks to you. Does he treat you equal partner in your pet's care, or do you feel like he is being condescending?
Does he welcome your questions and concerns & address your issues completely?
Does he explain procedures and shots he gives your pet?
How much is a physical exam, and how often is one needed? How much are shots? Does the vet require payment at the time of services, or are payment plans available?
Will you receive a discount if you have more than one pet?
Do they give you discounts if you refer other people?
How quickly can you get an appointment?
How is the parking?
