Healthy Bones for Your Pet

Arthritis in Pets

Arthritis can stem from a assortment of factors including genetics, poor diet, aging and Lyme disease. Since many other conditions produce similar symptoms, have your veterinarian do an x-ray to make a diagnosis. The good news is, whether you're looking to prevent the onset of arthritis or alleviate the symptoms, there are plenty of natural remedies to turn to.

In osteoarthritis, cartilage breaks down, which is the spongy, protective cushion between bones that meet in a joint. In pets, these are often hip, knee and ankle joints. As the cartilage wears away, the bones rub against one another, causing pain, inflammation and stiffness. This may cause some pets to have difficulty rising from a lying or sitting position, or limping or crying when a specific joint is touched.

The most common form, degenerative osteoarthritis, is characterized by the erosion of the joints' normally smooth cartilage surfaces. Rough new surfaces develop in their place and cause joint pain and inflammation.
