To Scratch or not to Scratch

Cats Aim to Please

Contrary to popular belief, kittens are willing to learn how to please you.  The best way to teach your cat manners is by using a gentle but firm tone while demonstrating the proper way to do things.  Patience and kindness should be used in every behavior lesson.  Hitting your pet is cruel and does not accomplish anything but fear.  A good discipline tool for cats is a spray bottle filled with water.  When you catch your cat misbehaving you should use a gentle spray of water from the bottle.  This way, your cat will associate the behavior with the unpleasant experience of water but won’t associate the unpleasant experience with you.  If you use other, more interactive techniques, your cat will learn to abstain from the wrong behavior in your presence but will continue it when you are not around.  Always reward your cat when he/she does the right thing.

To Scratch or not to Scratch

When it comes to cats it would be unrealistic to try to eliminate scratching. It is normal behavior to them.  Your goal as a cat owner should be to redirect scratching towards acceptable objects.  To start with, observe what kind of object your cat likes to scratch, where are they located, and what shape and texture it has. Try to find a substitute that has very close features. Cover the inappropriate object with double-sided sticky tape or aluminum foil. Then place the acceptable object close by.  Once your cat starts using the appropriate object you can start moving it little by little, no more than couple inches a day, to more suitable location.  Do not remove the double-sided sticky tape or aluminum foil until your cat is consistently using the appropriate object.  Then you can remove it gradually.
